Teeth Whitening

Before and after photo of teeth whitening treatmentYour teeth are a major component in the appearance of your smile. When they are beautiful and straight, you can smile wide and confidently. A beautiful smile can leave a powerful impression. However, if the bright white color of your teeth is dulled, the quality of your smile is affected, as if your confidence. Dull teeth can also impact the impressions you leave. At Tigard Family Dental, we can restore the brightness of your smile with teeth whitening.

What Causes Dull, Discolored Teeth?

There are several different factors that can contribute to the dulling and discoloration of your teeth.
•  Certain types of foods and beverages. These include things such as coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, and dark chocolate. These foods are heavily pigmented. The pigments cling to your enamel.
•  Tobacco products. Cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and other tobacco products all contain numerous harmful chemicals. The two most responsible for discoloration are tar and nicotine.
•  Certain types of medications, such as asthma medications, blood pressure medications, and certain antibiotics.
•  Your age. As you age, your enamel begins to wear away, exposing the naturally darker dentin underneath.

Why Not Just Use the Counter Products?

There are numerous whitening products available over the counter. These products include toothpaste, strips, gels, pens, and more. They all promise amazing results in a short period. However, these products all contain low levels of bleaching agents. While these products are widely available, they are rarely effective at helping you achieve the results that you are looking for.

In-Office Whitening

Your teeth can be whitened several shades in just one hour with an in-office procedure, or chairside whitening. This treatment begins with cleaning of your teeth. After the teeth are cleaned, a lip retractor is placed to keep your mouth open. The bleaching agent is applied to the surfaces of your teeth. A UV light is shone over your mouth, and it is left there for approximately one hour. The active ingredient breaks down, forming oxygen bubbles, which enter the enamel and the dentin, bleaching away the stains. The light aids in enhancing the results, which are noticeable right away.

At-Home Whitening

If you prefer to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home, we can provide you with whitening trays. These trays are made from digital impressions of your mouth. You are then provided with the trays and the bleaching agent, along with specific instructions for use. The trays are designed to be worn for several hours twice a day, or overnight while you sleep. Treatment varies based on your needs and your goals, but it can take a few weeks. Results begin to show in just under a week.

Keeping Your Smile Bright

While professional whitening can whiten your teeth several shades, providing you with a gorgeous smile, this treatment is not a permanent solution. The same factors that discolored your teeth in the first place can contribute to new stains. There are things you can do to help keep your teeth whiter longer.
•  Avoiding, or limiting, foods and beverages that stain.
•  Quitting smoking.
•  Brushing and flossing daily.
•  Regular dental cleanings and exams.
•  Periodic touchups.
