What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is used to rebuild the root or base of a missing tooth. With it, we can establish a connection between the jawbone and the new replacement tooth. This allows the new tooth to function in the same manner that a natural tooth does and allows for replacement without interfering or disrupting neighboring teeth.

The implant itself is designed with a threaded end and a connecting piece. The threaded end is embedded into your bone where it will grow as it heals fusing the two together. This healing process is known as osseointegration which is the fusing of bone to a device. Dental implants are made of either titanium or a non-metallic ceramic.

How do dental implants prevent bone loss?

One of the benefits of restoring teeth with dental implants is preventing bone loss. Bone is continuously rebuilding, but if it is not being used, the bone will pull in the resources at that location and the bone will atrophy. This also applies to missing teeth. When you lose a tooth, the bone pulls in the resources at that spot. The loss of one tooth may not make a visible difference, but the loss of multiple teeth can change the shape of your face. This change is often regarded as an older appearance.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

A majority of our patients will be able to meet candidacy requirements, though it may take some preparatory work or changes discussed with your physician. Dental implants are placed through a non-invasive surgical procedure most often in our office. A majority of implant treatments are completed with a local anesthetic or a conscious sedation option. Before treatment can be completed, we need to establish that the patient is able to heal at a reasonable rate. Healing can be affected from health conditions, medications, and some lifestyle choices. We will review this information during your consultation.

Dental Implant Care

Dental implant placement can take some time, and is often completed in phases. A majority of the care involved is the same as advised daily oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and rinsing. We will provide more information specific to your needs. We may need to discuss gaining control of gum disease to reduce infection potential.

Benefits of Dental Implants

The benefits of dental implants is the freedom to forget that you had missing teeth. You will be able to chew food appropriately, use your teeth with normal function, and care for them as you would care for your own teeth. Dental implants come with a variety of options, including replacing one tooth, many teeth, or even all of your teeth, with a firmly stabilized solution.
